The Iconic North American Tissue Paper Mill is making a Coming Back!

ELMWOOD PARK — The iconic Marcal sign that sat atop the Marcal Paper Mills building, visible from Route 80 since the 1940s, is coming back in 2020.

Marcal Paper Mill, a North Jersey institution for 80 years, will restart operations in January, nearly a year after the mill was decimated by a massive fire, officials told NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey on Monday.

Rob Baron, president and chief executive officer of Marcal Paper, said the paper mill will be "back in business" in January 2020, one year after 500 people lost their jobs due to the fire. The decision was made after assessing the site and merging with a Pennsylvania-based paper company, he said.

Marcal / Soundview offers a complete range of Away-From-Home paper products — including bath tissue, paper towels, napkins and facial tissue — to meet customers' needs across a variety of applications and commercial environments from healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and food service to retail and office.

The company who supplied Marcal Tissue, Home Steps, Bella Napkins has lost its production and tissue converting facility to the fire.

The question is if Atlas Holdings owner of Soundview/Marcal will re-stablish the factory? How could this affect The Paper Marketplace ?

Meanwhile, marcal is hard at work on plans to continue bringing Marcal bath tissue, paper towel, and napkin products back to your grocer’s shelf.

The products are usually bulk-packaged and often tied to marketing specialized dispensers that encourage brand loyalty. Competition usually revolves around price, compatibility with dispensers, and ease of replenishment. Increasingly, government agencies, university campuses, school systems and hospitals, among others, are specifying recycled content or FSC certified tissue and towels. Through the first quarter of the year, the U.S. tissue market is showing rather mixed signals, as the fall of the Iconic Tissue Paper Mill and the Increase Tariff Cost on goods coming from China and the entrance of new players is changing the paper marketplace . While some tissue producers reported higher volumes, slightly improved product pricing, or brighter prospects in the year last year 2018, most manufacturers blamed persistently competitive markets for the quarter's somewhat disappointing profits. First-quarter demand was a bit of a mixed bag. Year-over-year U.S. tissue demand is looking strong for January and February. Historically, March demand is normally slightly less, 1Q19 tissue consumption is expected to turned out to be comparable to 1Q18. The story changes somewhat if we separate the away-from-home market from retail consumer tissue paper. While retail tissue paper seems to have been relatively equal thus far this year, AfH demand during the last quarte...
